Winter Tyres: The Unsung Heroes of the Cold Road

Paul's GT3 has been treated to a set of Pirelli SottoZero3 winter tyres for the cold weather. He are his thoughts so far.

Ah, winter tyres. The misunderstood geniuses of the motoring world. Too many people think of them as those odd rubber doughnuts only necessary for when the world turns into a Christmas card. This, of course, is complete nonsense. Thinking winter tyres are just for snow is like assuming umbrellas are only for monsoons.

Let me explain. As soon as the temperature drops below 7°C, summer tyres start misbehaving. Their once supple rubber stiffens up like a pensioner at a death-metal concert, leaving you sliding around like Bambi on an ice rink. Winter tyres, however, come alive in the cold. They’re designed for it, thriving on frosty tarmac, in damp conditions, and yes, even in the occasional bit of snow.

This week, I had four Pirelli SottoZero 3 winter tyres fitted to the Porsche 992 GT3. A supercar on winter tyres? Madness, you say? No, it’s genius. Because there’s nothing more terrifying than all that glorious power going to waste as your rear end pirouettes off into a hedge.

But don’t just take my word for it. I’ve put these tyres through their paces, and here’s everything you need to know.

The Test: Summer vs Winter Tyres

I wanted to truly understand the difference between summer and winter tyres, so I did what any responsible driver would do: I found a bend and repeatedly threw the car at it.

With the summer tyres still on, I took a sharp bend – a proper “clench your teeth and pray” kind of bend – and slowly increased my speed with each attempt. At first, things were fine, but as soon as the speedometer started climbing, the back end got twitchy, and I could feel the tyres giving up on me. It was like they just couldn’t be bothered anymore.

Then, I swapped to the Pirelli SottoZero 3s, and it was like someone had sprinkled magic into the mix. I went back to the same corner, started at the same speed, and gradually increased again. This time, the tyres just gripped. No drama, no sliding, no twitchiness – just unshakable confidence. Even when I pushed the GT3 harder than any sane person should on a public road, the tyres held firm.

The difference was night and day. In summer tyres, the GT3 felt like a hyperactive dog on a freshly polished floor. With the SottoZero 3s? It was planted, predictable, and begging for more.

Dry, Wet, and Everything In Between

Let’s break it down. In the dry, at temperatures above 5°C, the SottoZero 3s felt excellent. They’re not quite as sharp as a dedicated summer tyre – the sidewalls are slightly softer, so you lose a tiny bit of that razor-edge precision. But the trade-off is more than worth it because, in the cold and wet, they’re simply unbeatable.

In damp conditions, the tyres were superb. Pirelli’s clever tread design seems to actively channel water away from the rubber, keeping you glued to the road even when the heavens have opened.

As for road noise, I was pleasantly surprised. Winter tyres are often criticised for being loud, but the SottoZero 3s are remarkably quiet. Granted, a GT3 isn’t exactly a whispering librarian to begin with, but I noticed no major increase in noise levels compared to my summer tyres.

Snow and Ice? Watch This Space

Now, I’ll admit, I haven’t had the chance to test these tyres on snow and ice yet. That’s coming next month when I’ll be honing my snow-driving skills on the Supercar Driver Ice Drive 2025 tour in Sweden. I’ll be sliding across frozen lakes and throwing a car sideways through snow-covered forests – but not in the GT3 unfortunately. Still, if the SottoZero 3s are as good in snow as they are in the wet, I have high hopes.

At the time of writing, there’s one space left on the tour, so if you fancy joining me and learning how to master snow and ice driving, head to the members’ area now.

The Cost Argument: Myth Busted

“But they’re so expensive!” cry the sceptics. To which I say: stop being ridiculous. Winter tyres don’t add to your costs – they spread them out. While you’re running on your winter tyres, your summer tyres are sitting comfortably in storage, not losing any tread.

Summer tyres, on the other hand, wear down faster in cold weather because the hardened rubber just can’t cope. So, by fitting winter tyres, you’re not only staying safer, but you’re also prolonging the life of your summer set. It’s not spending more – it’s spending smarter.

And let’s not even talk about all-weather tyres. They’re the beige trousers of the tyre world: a compromise in every condition, not excelling at anything.

Burton Pirelli Performance Centre: Tyre Nirvana

Now, let’s talk about where I had these tyres fitted – the Pirelli Performance Centre in Burton. This isn’t just a tyre shop. Oh no. This is a temple for car enthusiasts.

Walking in, you’re greeted by a spotless showroom and a team of friendly staff who know their tyres better than most people know their own birthdays. They’ll happily store your off-season tyres for free, offer you a coffee that’s genuinely better than some cafés I’ve been to, and even give your car a free alignment and tyre check.

Pirelli audits these centres monthly, with a gruelling 120+ point checklist. Burton currently holds a platinum rating, which means they’re basically perfect – they can only lose a single point before falling off their pedestal. And let me tell you, their service reflects that.

Tyrelife: Because Life Happens

Here’s another perk: if you buy two or more tyres, Burton PPC offers Pirelli’s Tyrelife programme. If you manage to get a puncture within the first three months, they’ll replace the tyre for free. No quibbling, no hassle. Just a fresh tyre and a pat on the back.

Final Thoughts: Winter Driving Done Right

So, there you have it. The Pirelli SottoZero 3s have proven themselves to be a revelation on cold, wet British roads. They’ve transformed the GT3 into a confident, sure-footed beast, even in conditions that would make summer tyres throw in the towel.

If you’re still clinging to the idea that winter tyres are an unnecessary expense, it’s time to let go. They’re safer, smarter, and downright essential if you want to enjoy driving in winter. And if you want the best service, head to Pirelli Performance Centre Burton – they’ll take care of you and your car like royalty.

Winter is coming, but with the right tyres, it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Stay safe, stay on the road, and most importantly, stay out of the hedge.
