Let's take a look at one of 750 AMG GT R Roadsters. Is it worth more than the Coupe?
The Mercedes AMG GT R is a car we so often rave about, and we even put our money where our mouth is by running one as a tour lead car for over a year. It's a different beast to the AMG GT or GT S, with a really appealing blend of capability, brute power and emotion. Oh, and they're ridiculously good value at under £100,000.
But what about the GT R Roadster? It wouldn't surprise me if some of you don't know this car even exists. Just 750 were produced worldwide and the GT R's hardcore ethos perhaps doesn't go with the drop-top boulevard cruiser on paper, but this is a rare machine for the money, and I whilst I haven't driven a Roadster, spending plenty of miles behind the wheel of GT R Coupes leads me to imagine it will work very well as a drop-top.
Yeah, the GT R is a pretty raw beast with its focus tilted more towards the track than almost any other AMG, but it's definitely more road-biased than say a GT3 RS or the later GT Black Series, and it really does work well on the road with a surprisingly compliant ride in its softest setting, so why not chop the roof off? I don't think the looks hang together like the Coupe, but the rarity and being able to hear that V8 in the fresh air are definite draws!
It isn't often you see one come up for sale, so let's check out this one listed by our friend Tom Hartley Jnr.
It's a UK-supplied car purported to be in as-new condition with 12,000 miles on the clock in metallic Magnetite Black with AMG high performance ceramic brakes, AMG Track Pace telemetry system, AMG Matt Black carbon fibre carbon trim package and as well as some more comfort-inclined toys like the really comfortable, electrically-adjustable AMG performance seats, Burmester high-end surround sound and Apple CarPlay. There's PPF to hopefully keep it looking like new as well.
We think the AMG GT R as a whole is greatly undervalued given its breadth of ability and lack of direct rivals, and with this limited roadster still not up for huge money for what it is, we're intrigued to see where these go in time to come.
