From Showroom to Silverstone

Hilton & Moss General Manager William Garrett on his unforgettable racing debut at Silverstone Festival.

These days, driving fast cars on the road can feel like a bit of an obstacle course. Static, mobile and average speed cameras, dash cams, speed bumps and of course potholes, combined with cars that make it ever easier to reach licence-troubling speeds quicker than you can say “nought to sixty”.

I think that’s why we’ve seen such an increasing interest in racing over these past few years, with more and more people in our community deciding to get their ultimate thrills on track, racing wheel to wheel, just like most of us dreamed about as kids.

One of those people is General Manager of Hilton & Moss, William Garrett, who recently raced at Silverstone for the first time at the Silverstone Festival in a pre-’63 Jaguar E-Type. It’s safe to say he had a great time on track, but there was even more to the experience than just driving fast, so here’s William’s account of his first race at Silverstone.

Driving at this year’s Silverstone Festival was an experience I’ll never forget. As it was my very first time racing at Silverstone (and my first time competing in the Festival itself), I’ll admit, it was quite intimidating. The calibre of the event, the level of the circuit and the sheer number of people watching all added to the pressure.

The first lap is always the most nerve-racking, but once you find a rhythm, it becomes something truly special. What really struck me was the respect across the historic grid. Every driver out there is mindful of the cars and of each other, which makes the racing competitive but also incredibly rewarding.

For me personally, racing at Silverstone Festival was a real checkpoint. It’s one of the biggest historic racing events in the UK, a proper race with proper teams and proper drivers. To be there in our Pre’63 Jaguar E-Type and to finish competitively was both a surprise and an overwhelming experience. Having Tim alongside me as co-driver was invaluable; his experience gave me the confidence to push and enjoy the moment.

Beyond the racing, it was fantastic to meet so many fellow enthusiasts who share the same passion. It was enjoyable, tiring, but above all, deeply rewarding.”
