Ferrari F40: The Best Investment for Petrolheads?

Collectable Cars as an Investment Class

For many of us, knowing that we have an example of Woking’s or Maranello’s finest in the garage is more than enough reward in itself. The pride of ownership, the incredible driving experience, and the sense of theatre that they bring make owning a supercar a true delight. Well, right up until the next service, of course, but you can’t have the rainbow without the rain, and all that…

But for another type of owner, there needs to be another angle. A cherry on top to sweeten the deal, and that is to create an earning opportunity out of their time on the V5. Put simply, to return more for their car than they originally paid.

And who can blame them? The problem is, the means required to diversify across a fleet of cherished classics is quite considerable, making it an activity reserved purely for the uber-wealthy. Mind you, if you can get yourself into that top tier, the average returns that the established ‘blue-chip’ cars have exhibited over the last 10 years make it a very lucrative pastime. Try average uplifts of around 20% on the right kind of machinery.

More than just the gains which have historically outperformed traditional investments during inflationary cycles, the car market cars is not correlated with traditional markets, offering true portfolio diversification, and perhaps best of all, it’s tax efficient, with TheCarCrowd’s platform offering a capital gains tax-free structure.

Supercar investing is basically incredibly well-informed betting. The more you know, the greater chance that the odds will tip in your favour, so for TheCarCrowd, that means daily analysis, for several hours, of car prices, trends, auction results and classifieds. Since 2019, they’ve been collating over one million data points to create a matrix of market trends that almost allows them to see into the future. If a trend is happening, and you can truly understand why, you’ll know when to jump on the rollercoaster as it goes up, but just as importantly, know when to step off.

The Ferrari F40: Investment Case

If there’s one car it doesn’t take an expert to see as an incredible asset though, it’s the Ferrari F40. 1,311 examples were produced between 1987 and 1992 to mark the 40th anniversary of Ferrari’s first road car. It was the fastest road car in the world at the time, and it was the last car personally signed off by Enzo himself.

Historical Value Trends

Obviously values vary massively depending on mileage, condition and provenance, but here’s how typical mid-range values have changed since the F40’s release in 1987.

Year Value Adjusted for Inflation
1987 £160,000 £465,000
1995 £220,000 £455,000
2000 £230,000 £440,000
2005 £275,000 £490,000
2010 £400,000 £620,000
2015 £800,000 £1,100,000
2020 £1,160,000 £2,000,000
2025 £2,500,000 £2,500,000

Whilst the F40 never depreciated, for around 15 years, it held steady when adjusted for inflation, but once it set off, it snowballed into one of the most sought after, most valuable supercars in history, especially for the numbers produced. Values of some cars have multiplied by nearly 10 times in 15 years, and continued upward trajectory is expected due to limited supply and increasing interest from high net worth individuals across the globe for iconic, 1980s era analogue supercars.

F40 Syndicate Ownership

Because the F40 is now attainable for so few, preserving them and making sure we still see them is an important mission. That is a mission shared by David Spickett, founder of The Car Crowd. He is a through-and-through petrolhead who, like so many of us, idolises the F40 and wanted to help preserve it while bringing the prospect of ownership much more into the real world for more people.

With their syndicate ownership model, you can own a fractional stake in collectable cars like the F40 and enjoy the potential returns they can offer as they appreciate over time, without suffering capital gains tax. Plus, it means for years to come, there will always be an F40 taking pride of place among the hypercar paddock at Secret Meet, and maybe you’ll be able to say you own a piece of it.

26 allocations will be available at £100,000 each, launching this summer. High demand is expected, so it’s highly recommended to pre-register below.
