Bernie Ecclestone's F1 Car Collection Sold to Red Bull Heir

Tom Hartley Jnr announces sale of Bernie Ecclestone’s incredible collection of 69 historic Grand Prix cars, in 'The Sale of the Century'.

The collection was sold in its entirety to Red Bull heir Mark Mateschitz. 32-year-old Mateschitz is the son of the late Dietrich Mateschitz, who co-founded Red Bull and died in 2022. Dietrich was also a personal friend of Ecclestone.

Mateschitz has confirmed he will keep the collection together so future generations can appreciate it in its entirety, and has also committed to opening the collection for public viewing, keeping the legacy of these cars alive for years to come.

The collection is regarded as the most important race car collection, spanning 70 years of Grand Prix racing cars, from championship-winning Ferraris driven by the likes of Niki Lauda, Mike Hawthorne and Michael Schumacher, through to Bernie’s own Brabhams, through to even more historic rarities such as an ex-Works Maserati 250F, 16-cylinder Mark II BRM and the Vanwall VW10.

Tom Hartley Jnr says the collection attracted interest from all around the world including offers on individual cars, and interest from Sovereign Wealth Funds in acquiring the whole collection in order to open museums featuring the cars.

Ecclestone says, “They've gone to a good home, which is the real thing I was interested in making sure. I wouldn't have sold them to anyone unless I knew where they were going to finish up. They’re going to build something like a museum and that's where they'll be”.

Tom Hartley Jnr says, “On behalf of the entire Tom Hartley Jnr team, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to Bernie for the incredible opportunity and trust he bestowed upon us. The sale of the ‘Ecclestone Grand Prix Collection’ is truly a ground-breaking achievement, and although the deal concluded within only a few months of bringing it to the market, it was the culmination of nearly two years of dedicated attention by several members of the team. It was extremely satisfying to see the cars go to such an incredible home”.
